This work is properly called Five Negro Melodies for Piano Trio, and is the C-T's arrangement for piano, violin and cello of five movements from his historic collection 24 Negro Melodies for Piano.
I actually the director of Chamber Music Charleston, and we are performing Coleridge-Taylor’s Piano Trio tomorrow (and Monday and Tuesday for sold out audiences). Thank you very much for correcting me about the mis-title! I am embarrassed that it happened – for some reason I had earlier notes that simply listed the work as Piano Trio Op. 59, No. 1. I will make the correction when I make pre-concert announcements. I must say that I absolutely love this work and wish there was an edition for purchase (does anyone know if an edition exists?), as I think it is just a wonderful piece and the audience always loves it.
