Nathaniel Dett Chorale in 'Roots of Freedom Festival' at Underground Railroad Destination, Oakville, Ontario Oct. 22 & 23

The Nathaniel Dett Chorale of Toronto, Ontario is named for the Canadian-born composer and pianist R. Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943), who is profiled at AfriClassical.com, with a complete Works List by Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma. The Chorale sends us news of a 2-day festival, Oct. 22-23, which celebrates the Black History of Oakville, an important Canadian arrival point of the Underground Railroad:

Welcome to the celebration! Featuring a unique opportunity to enjoy The Nathaniel Dett Chorale and Joe Sealy at the same time...

"The 'Roots of Freedom Festival' is a two-day event held in Oakville, building upon local Black history and heritage.

"The Festival:
Includes artists, volunteers, local resources, and citizens from various sectors of Oakville and the Region of Halton.
Involves participants from the education community, community organizations, members of the community - from Oakville, Halton Region, and beyond.
Complements and builds upon the mandate, role and past activities of the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH).
Focuses on local Black history and heritage within the context of the diaspora and impact of slavery --an important part of Halton's history that many are unaware of.
Provides facilitated opportunities to integrate Black history into school curicula.

Benefits to the community:
Better knowledge of the slave trade, its impact and legacy, while generating pride and awareness of the contributions of the early Black community who settled in Oakville via the Underground Railroad.
Heightened awareness of the Oakville Museum's Black History exhibits, the Underground Railroad, within and beyond the Halton Region.
