The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Awards and Concert remains one of the region’s leading cultural commemorations. The 2011 concert marks the 21st anniversary of the awards ceremony and the Colorado Symphony’s performance, honoring outstanding community activists and Dr. King’s legacy. Guest conductor Chelsea Tipton will lead this year’s concert.

Tipton is now celebrating his second season as Music Director of The Symphony of Southeast Texas in Beaumont. 2010 saw the culmination of a seven year tenure with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra as Resident Conductor. Tipton’s farewell performance, a successful gala concert to benefit education, played to a packed audience. As a sought-after guest conductor, Tipton has appeared with major orchestras in the United States, including the Chicago Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the New World Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Nashville Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic and the San Antonio Symphony among others. In 2004, Tipton led the Boston Pops Orchestra in their annual Gospel Night Concert that the Boston Globe called an “Impressive debut”.
