Sphinx Founder Receives Royal Philharmonic Society Honor

The Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) has voted to elect Sphinx Founder and President, Aaron P. Dworkin, as an Honorary Member during 2013, its bicentenary year.

RPS is one of the oldest and most eminent music societies in the world with direct links to Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Wagner and many of the iconic figures of classical music. Honorary Membership of the Society is a significant honor awarded to musicians of distinction who have contributed outstanding services to music. The honorary membership awards have only been awarded 130 times in RPS's 200 year history. Dworkin was one of only five honorees selected this year and the only honoree from the United States.

Since the first Honorary Member, Carl Maria von Weber, was elected in 1826, some one hundred composers and outstanding musicians have been so honored. You can read the list of previous recipients here and it includes legendary, celebrated figures such as Brahms, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Berlioz, Saint-Sains, Aaron Copland, and most recently Abreu (the founder of the famed El Sistema program).
