John Malveaux: Interlochen has also performed music of William Grant Still, Adolphus Hailstork, Alvin Singleton, Jonathan Holland & Olly Wilson

On March 26, 2014 AfriClassical posted this message from John Malveaux of www.MusicUNTOLD.com:

John Malveaux: 'According to a recent email from Byron Hanson, archivist at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Ulysses Kay visited Interlochen in April, 1968.'

John Malveaux has since written:

Maestro Byron Hanson also mentioned "I won't claim Interlochen has been especially generous in performing music by African or African-American composers, but for the record, I have previously alluded to the early William Grant Still performances in the 1930s and '40s. More recently we have performed Adolphus Hailstork's Symphony No. 2, and gave the world premiere of Alvin Singleton's "Umoja: Each One off Us Counts" at the 1996 Olympic Arts Festival in Atlanta. I remember conducting works by Billy Taylor, Olly Wilson, and Jonathan Holland, and there may be others of course, but I just wanted to mention those I can recall!"
